Shpg Gazette 8/2/12 GERMANY's Hapag-Lloyd has launched an unusual rotation that gives US Pacific north west shippers all-water weekly access to European ports via Panama. After Hamburg Sud announced an end to its Caribbean-Europe CAMS service in December, it provided ships on Hapag-Lloyd's MPS service, which rotates through Cartagena, Manzanillo (Mexico), Los Angeles, Oakland, Seattle, Vancouver, Portland, Oakland, Los Angeles, Manzanillo (Mexico), Manzanillo (Panama), Cartagena, Caucedo, Tangiers, Valencia, Cagliari, Livorno, Genoa, Marseilles-Fos, Barcelona, Valencia, Tangiers, and back to Cartagena. Said Portland harbour spokesman Josh Thomas: "We see that as a benefit to exporters by having more efficient, dependable, and competitive options for regional shippers." Hinterland reach involves Tidewater Barge Line container service from Lewiston, Idaho, 360 miles up the Snake River, going downstream to Boardman, Oregon on the upper reaches of the Columbia with cargo transloaded in Portland, which experienced a nine per cent increase in container traffic last year. The Portland terminal is run by Manila's International Container Terminal Services Inc. (ICTSI). The rise in container volumes helped the port tie its third best tonnage year, totalling 13.4 million tons versus 13.1 million tons in 2010. |
