Rail Transportation Situation The rail system has continued to fare poorly.
The goal of 24 trips per day has still yet to
be reached. Locomotive and wagon damage continue
to cause train delays and cancellations, and the
major repairs required for the railway track between
Lat Krabang and Laem Chabang, which are now complete,
caused severe cancellations. Despite these repairs,
there are still delays as the main problems have not yet been solved.
In 2007, the SRT plans to increase its trip to 26-28 per day.
Furthermore, the double track rail from Chacheongsao to Laem
Chabang is still pending due to changes in the SRT Board and
Government. Increases in train capacity will not be possible
until the second phase of the double track rail is completed.
Road Conditions Road conditions are still very good.
The traffic around the ICD has improved.
Parking in prohibited areas has decreased
as the police are now ticketing unauthorized cars.
New ICD Project The planning of the new ICD project is still pending
as the SRT has to wait for new government elections
so it can receive directions.
Renewal of Concessions The SRT and the ICD operators have not reached any conclusions yet.
The price is now lower than previously requested by the SRT. The
concession has already expired, but it is not clear when the rate
will be finalized and when the contract will be signed. It is very
difficult for the ICD operators to plan their business strategies
without knowing what the rate will be and what terms and conditions
will be applied. At this point, it seems that all ICD operators can
do is wait and see.
