| Recently, technology has transformed global business,
and Thailand is no exception. This transformation has
not only affected us economically, but also socially
and politically. Currently, the Port Authority of
Thailand (PAT) is pursuing changes to its Information
Technology system (such as e-port and e-paperless strategies)
that will enhance the competitiveness of the Thai shipping
industry in the global market. Despite a positive outlook,
development and implementation of this technology will be
difficult because of many parties involved and the need to
deliver practical rules and regulations. Additionally, the
unstable political and economic situation in Thailand will
only create more challenges for the PAT and the Customs Department.
However, successful implementation will create more efficiencies and
reduce redundancies in our business practices.
We anticipate that successful implementation
will drive Thailand’s ports to be among the
most modern ports in terms of information technology,
communications flow, and industrial statistical record
tracking. We expect that a more efficient electronic
information system will facilitate bringing container
throughputs to 10 millions TEUs by 2010. The Committee
of Communications & Statistics will also focus on new
IT development to give all members a better system for
real time information updates on important issues and
events in our industry. Our website, www.thaibsaa.com,
will be upgraded to be a key tool for communications.
All BSAA members will be able to find more information
on the website, such as articles and publications about
member activities. Furthermore, we will also launch a new
BSAA handbook available to all members as well as the public.
The committee will continue its efforts to
develop higher standards for our industry,
and feedback from all BSAA members is welcome
and valuable for these development initiatives.
